Increased nausea by the usage of high doses is observed in most cases. This effect disappears with dose reduction or passes with constant use for a short period of time. Intake of 5-HTP increases the impact cortisol within the next 3 hours in patients with panic deviations.

Possible Combinations with Other Ingredients

Regular use of 5-HTP may result in the reduction of dopamine levels. On the other hand, high doses of L-tyrosine can lead to a shortage of 5-HTP and serotonin. 

To avoid this effect, most experts recommend concomitant, use of 5-HTP with L-tyrosine or L-phenylalanine. Another possible mechanism for preventing dopamine deficiency is the combination of 5-HTP with L-DOPA or Mucuna.

5-HTP may be combined with GABA, melatonin, L-tryptophan, and niacin without possible interactions. The main objective is to improve sleep, relieve and counteract anxiety and depression.

Dopamine decarboxylase enzyme enhances the synthesis of serotonin from 5-HTP.  It has been found that catechins in green tea, including EGCG, inhibit the activity of the enzyme and is therefore not recommended to combine 5-HTP with green tea.

Combining 5-HTP with medication is recommended only after consulting a doctor. Intake of 5-HTP with SSRI (serotonin reuptake blockers) is not recommended. The possible combination can be even fatal.

Where to Find 5-HTP

5-HTP is a popular dietary supplement and is available as an extract from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia. All extracts on the market are standardized to a high content of 5-HTP.

​Most products contain a dose of 50 mg, 100 mg and less than 200 mg per capsule.  Similar products are NOW Foods 5-HTP 50 mg and 5-HTP 100 mg

Griffonia is often used in complex formulas, most commonly in formulas for improving sleep, for counteracting depression and less as a fat burner.
