What Is Amla Extract

The Amla extract (Indian gooseberry, Amalaki, Amalaki) contains dry Amla fruits. It is available in capsules or as a liquid extract (drops).

You can seldom find Amla bark, leaves, or root extract.

What Does the Amla Extract Contain

A cocktail of relatively common ingredients: a high concentration of vitamin C, phenols: ellagic acid, gallic acid, quercetin, kaempferol, corilagin, geranium, furozin, galotannins, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, proanthocyanidins.

There are substances from the group of the tannoids in the Amla fruits. Four of them are more interesting – these are the tannoids with antioxidant activity: emblikanin A, emblikanin B, punigluconin, pedunculagin.

What Should You Know About the Tannoids in the Amla Extract

The emblicanins are specific antioxidants that possess extended antioxidant activity, because in their binding to free radicals or metals they remain active as antioxidants over some metabolic reactions. This is marked as antioxidants free of oxidant state response.

Many other antioxidants exhibit specific antioxidant activity, but under certain conditions or after several reactions, such as binding to metals, they are converted to toxic hydroxyl free radicals.

Tannoids have reactivity similar to the one of vitamin C, without them turning or containing vitamin C in their molecules.

Purpose and Health Benefits of the Amla Extract

Amla is extremely popular in South and Southeast Asia. Chinese and Indian (Ayurveda) folk medicine use Amla to treat some diseases.

Interestingly, apart from matches in the schools regarding the use of Amla, there are applications in diseases from one of the medical traditions that are not confirmed in the other.

Besides balancing the three doshas, Amla is used in Ayurveda to:

  • promote longevity;
  • improve digestion;
  • combat constipation;
  • soften fever (temperature, chills);
  • reduce a cough;
  • purify the blood;
  • relieve asthma events;
  • refresh the body;
  • increase intelligence.

Chinese traditional medicine uses "yuganzi" (Amla) for the treatment of a sore throat.

In modern medicine Amla is used with success for:

  • diabetic neuropathy;
  • prevention and prophylaxis of cardiovascular diseases;
  • to combat aging;
  • healing of wounds and sores along the mucous membrane and skin;
  • in the treatment of liver diseases because of its established hepatoprotective properties;
  • the antimicrobial effect of bacteria in the urinary-genital system;
  • to combat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis;
  • anti-cancer potential.

How Does the Amla Extract Work

After the absorption of the tannoids, either through the skin, or the gastrointestinal tract, they circulate in the cells and the intercellular spaces of the tissues by binding with potentially free radicals in several steps of reactions.

Proven Benefits in People

  • High antioxidant activity;
  • Hepatoprotective properties of anti-toxins and free radicals);
  • A battle with aging – by antioxidant activity.

Are There Side Effects and Contraindications

Not available or well-documented information about side effects. Animal studies do not show such data.

There are no known interactions with other substances, extracts, and herbs.

Who and in What Combination Should not Take Amla Extract

The intake of Amla extract is not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants, and young children.

Recommended Doses and Way of Intake

Little is known about the dosage of the extract. The studied with success doses in humans in studies on diabetes, and antioxidant activity is 1 to 6 g/day of dry fruit extract for 21 days.

In the absence of other recommendations (by a doctor), one should follow the instructions on the product label.

In Which Sports and Health Supplements Can We Find Amla Extract

You can find Amla extract as a standalone product, within complex antioxidants, in herbal formulas with traditional Ayurveda character, or combined.

In the sports supplementation, Amla can be found as a maintenance formula in thermogenic fat burners that will mitigate the oxidative stress, caused by some of the active ingredients and free radicals, produced as a result of the increased metabolism of sportspeople, taking fat burners.
